Society and the news

Society, news, the press, public opinion, social issues.

What holds these lists together

News Chinese is a compressed register. Headlines leave out whatever can be left out, long names are cut to two characters — 北京(Běijīng)大学(dàxué) becomes 北大(Běidà) — and written words replace spoken ones, as 将(jiāng) for "will" and 已(yǐ) for "already". Reports mark how sure they are: 据(jù)报道(bàodào), according to reports, names a source, and 据说(jùshuō) passes on what is said. Many words about society end in 化(huà), which works like English "-isation": 现代化(xiàndàihuà), modernisation, 老龄化(lǎolínghuà), the ageing of a population. The lists run from an ordinary bulletin to the issues a society argues about.

The four lists

Spread across the levels

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
