The press and public opinion

Publishing and editing, statements and rumours, sources and the public.

Words about the press are often built on 报(bào), to report or a newspaper, 刊(kān), a periodical, and 稿(gǎo), a draft or manuscript. Several come in pairs that help in reading the news critically: 谣言(yáoyán) and 真相(zhēnxiàng), rumour and the truth; 失实(shīshí) and 更正(gēngzhèng), a report that got it wrong and the correction; and 核实(héshí), checking, which careful reporting does before anything else. Note that 宣传(xuānchuán) is a neutral word for publicity or spreading the word, much more often than it means propaganda.
