School, university and research

The classroom, the exam, the lecture hall and the paper.

What holds these lists together

Teachers are addressed by their title, not by their name alone: 王(Wáng)老师(lǎoshī), family name first, and 老师(lǎoshī) is polite enough that it is used for respected people far outside a school. The school years are counted with 年级(niánjí), so a pupil in the third year is in 三(sān)年级(niánjí), and the university entrance examination, 高考(gāokǎo), shapes a whole vocabulary of its own. Going to school and studying are different verbs: 上学(shàngxué) is attending, 学习(xuéxí) is the studying itself. The lists run from the pencil case to the research project and the thesis.

Spread across the levels

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
