Degrees, courses, theses and the words of academic life.
These are the words of university life beyond the first lecture: degrees, supervisors, theses and the research behind them. The degrees go up in a line — 本科, 硕士, 博士 — and the last two also name the person who holds the degree. A doctor who treats patients is 医生, never 博士. And note the difference between 学问, the learning a person carries, and 学术, the academic world and its standards.
