Farming and the food supply

Fields and harvests, livestock and fisheries, and what the label says about food.

Farming words grow from a few characters: 农(nóng) (农业(nóngyè), 农民(nóngmín), 农药(nóngyào)), 种(zhòng), “to plant”, and 养(yǎng), “to raise”. The planting character changes its reading with its meaning: zhòng in 种植(zhòngzhí), to grow, but zhǒng, a seed, in 播种(bōzhǒng). And English “rice” is three words: the plant in the field (水稻(shuǐdào)), the grain (大米(dàmǐ)) and the cooked rice in the bowl (米饭(mǐfàn)).
