Ce que quelqu'un a dit, sans guillemets.
Le discours indirect reprend ce qu'une personne a dit sans conserver ses mots. Il s'introduit par un verbe de parole et le plus souvent par that, qui peut tomber.
La différence la plus importante en anglais sépare say de tell. tell réclame toujours une personne : He told me that … Après say il n'y a pas de personne, ou bien elle est rattachée par to : He said that …, He said to me that … Ni He told that ni He said me n'existent.
Le français ne fait pas ce partage : « dire » sert aux deux et accepte le complément indirect sans autre forme de procès — « il m'a dit ». C'est de là que sort He said me, l'une des fautes qui s'entendent le plus vite.

that peut tomber, surtout à l'oral.
I think she is right.Je crois qu'elle a raison.
L'ordre des mots reste celui de la phrase déclarative.
He said he would be late.Il a dit qu'il viendrait plus tard.
Autres verbes introducteurs : explain, mention, admit, add, reply, announce.
She explained that the office was closed.Elle a expliqué que le bureau était fermé.

Le repère est formel et non sémantique : si un me, him ou us suit immédiatement le verbe, ce doit être tell. « Il m'a dit » est He told me, jamais He said me. Et inversement He told that … n'existe pas non plus : tell sans personne ne se dit pas.
tell veut un interlocuteur, say se suffit à lui-même.
