More about this list

Animal names stay singular after a number: iki kedi“two cats”dört yavru“four young” The parts of an animal or a plant are compounds with -i: kuşun kanadı “the bird’s wing”, kedi yavrusu “kitten”, literally “cat its-young”. Watch the words that soften: kuyruk → kuyruğu, sincap → sincabı, kanat → kanadı, and one-syllable kurt → kurdu. In the garden two verbs do double duty: açmak “to open” also means “to bloom”, and ekmek “bread” is also the verb “to sow”.
