Everyday life in Turkey
The set phrases for every occasion, festivals and celebrations, travelling in the country and two words for one thing.
What holds these lists together
For almost every situation Turkish has a set phrase, and if you know it, people see you differently at once. Someone working hears Kolay gelsin!; someone who sneezes hears Çok yaşa! and replies Sen de gör!; someone moving into a new flat is told Güle güle oturun!. Then there are the festivals — Bayram, weddings and engagements — and travelling around the country. The last list shows a peculiarity: for many things there is an older and a newer word, cevap and yanıt for “answer”, kelime and sözcük for “word”, and both are correct.
For example: başınız sağ olsun (my condolences), bayram (festival, holiday), hamam (hamam, Turkish bath), yanıt (answer, reply)
