Food and drink
What people eat and drink, ordering, eating out, cooking and the market.
What holds these lists together
At the table Turkish is rich and precise. There is not one word for “cook”, but several: water boils (kaynamak), you cook a meal (pişirmek), vegetables are boiled in water (haşlamak). Many eating places are named after what they serve, with the ending -ci: kebabs at the kebapçı, soup at the çorbacı. And some sentences belong to a meal and are never left out: Afiyet olsun! before eating and Elinize sağlık! to whoever cooked. The lists go from breakfast via ordering to your own kitchen.
For example: yemek (food, dish, meal), menü (menu; set menu), meyhane (tavern (with meze)), tarif (recipe; description), un (flour)
