Durakta

The bus does not come, an old man knows why, and Selin takes a taxi.

A morning at the bus stop. Watch the times with -de/-da, English “at”: yedi buçukta “at half past seven”. And the way people address each other: the old man calls Selin kızım, “my daughter”, and she calls him amca, “uncle” — that is how strangers speak to each other kindly in Turkish.

Selin her sabah otobüsle işe gidiyor. Durak evin yakınında.

Otobüs her gün saat yedi buçukta geliyor. Ama bugün otobüs yok. Saat sekiz, hâlâ yok.

Durakta yaşlı bir adam da bekliyor. Adam soruyor: “Kızım, saat kaç?” Selin: “Sekiz, amca.”

Adam söylüyor: “Bugün otobüs yok. Yol kapalı.” Selin bunu bilmiyor.

Selin taksiye biniyor. Taksi pahalı ama hızlı. Sekiz buçukta Selin işte.
