Text, rehearsal, stage, performance — all of it before the curtain.
El mutis is what a Spanish script prints where an English one prints « exit », and the two words watch the same moment from opposite sides. « Exit » is Latin for « he goes out » and describes the movement. Mutis comes from the Latin for silent and describes what the actor stops doing: speaking. Hacer mutis is to leave the stage, and the phrase walked off it long ago — mutis por el foro, out through the back of the set, is what you say of somebody who slipped away from an argument without answering. English has « to make oneself scarce » for that, with no theatre left in it at all.
