Eye medicine in Spanish

Sight, pressure, retina — and what the spectacle prescription says.

La graduación is the strength written on a spectacle prescription, and unas gafas graduadas are prescription glasses. The same word does three other jobs English gives to three other words. It is the ceremony at the end of a degree; it is the rank an officer holds; and it is the strength of a drink — la graduación alcohólica, the per cent on the bottle. What runs through all four is a scale with marks on it, and the point on the scale that applies to you. English has « prescription », « graduation », « rank » and « proof », and shares nothing between them.
