Pregnancy and birth in Spanish

Antenatal care, labour, birth, the weeks after — the words used in the delivery room and the clinic.

El alumbramiento comes from alumbrar, to light, and Spanish says the whole thing that way: dar a luz is to give birth, literally to give to the light. A birth is a coming out of the dark into the visible, and the language repeats it every time. English took a different picture: to « deliver » is to set free or hand over, the same word used of a parcel and of a promise kept. In clinical Spanish el alumbramiento has narrowed to the delivery of the afterbirth — the last thing brought to light.
