More about this list

This page is about words and is not a guide to picking anything: that is learned from somebody who knows, in front of the mushroom. The fourth entry is el sombrero del hongo, and it is worth noticing what Spanish has done there. English calls that part the « cap » and keeps hats out of it; Spanish uses el sombrero, the same broad-brimmed hat the word means everywhere else, and the picture carries on into the anatomy — el ala del sombrerois the brim on a hat and the outer edge of a mushroom cap alikela cutícula del sombrerois its skin There is even a return journey: un sombrero hongo is what English calls a bowler hat, named after the mushroom it resembles. Two languages looked at the same object; one saw a cap and the other a hat, and only one of them kept borrowing back and forth.
