El cliente que siempre tenía razón
A rule nobody wrote down, and what it costs.
A text about a sentence everybody knows. Watch the difference between tener razón and llevar razón, and the places where the text does not adopt a claim but only reports it.
En la tienda había una regla que nadie había escrito en ningún sitio y que todos conocían: al cliente no se le dice que no. Funcionaba casi siempre, y las pocas veces que no funcionaba salían caras.
Aquel sábado un hombre quiso devolver unos zapatos usados sin ticket. Dijo que se los habían regalado, que no le servían y que en otras tiendas se lo aceptaban. Lo dijo en voz alta y delante de seis personas que esperaban.
Marta llevaba dos años allí y sabía tres cosas: que no había derecho a devolución sin ticket, que el jefe le daría el dinero para acabar antes, y que el hombre volvería en un mes con otro par.
Le explicó la norma dos veces, con calma, y no cedió. El hombre pidió el libro de reclamaciones, lo pidió otra vez más alto y acabó saliendo sin escribir nada. Tres clientes de la cola miraron a Marta y uno le dijo que había hecho bien.
El lunes el jefe le dijo que quizá habría sido más fácil darle el dinero. Marta contestó que sí, que habría sido más fácil, y siguió colocando cajas. Ninguno de los dos volvió a sacar el tema.
