Dos recuerdos del mismo día

Two people, one afternoon, two stories.

A text about memory not being a storage device. It comes in two parts, and the words in which the versions differ are there both times — they are worth comparing.

Según Ana, aquella tarde llegó ella primero, esperó veinte minutos en la puerta del museo y ya estaba a punto de irse cuando apareció Luis. Se acuerda del frío y de que él no se disculpó.

Según Luis, llegaron casi a la vez. Él venía andando desde la estación, la vio de lejos y levantó la mano; ella no lo vio porque estaba mirando el móvil. Recuerda que hacía sol.

Los dos coinciden en lo demás: entraron, la exposición les pareció peor de lo que esperaban, salieron antes de la hora y tomaron algo en un bar de al lado donde no había sitio para sentarse.

Ninguno miente. Lo que cada uno guarda no es la tarde entera sino lo que le importó de ella, y a Ana le importó esperar mientras que a Luis le importó volver a verla. La memoria no guarda: elige, y después no avisa de que ha elegido.

Se lo contaron el uno al otro años después y discutieron media hora. Al final se rieron, aunque cada uno siguió creyendo lo suyo, que es exactamente lo que era de esperar.
