Beach and bathing holiday

The fourteenth entry is chapinhar, what children do in the shallows, and the everyday British English word for it is « to paddle ». It is worth a stop, because the same spelling does a second job that has nothing to do with standing still. « To paddle » is to walk about in shallow water with your shoes off: As crianças chapinham na beira da água is the children are paddling at the water’s edge, and the shallow basin in a park is « a paddling pool ». « To paddle » is also to drive a small boat forward with a blade held in both hands, which is why a canoe is paddled while a rowing boat is rowed, and why « a paddle » is the blade. One word, two pictures, and only the sentence around it says which. Two notes. In American English the basin is « a wading pool » and the shallows verb is « to wade », so the doubling barely comes up. And chapinhar keeps a noise that « paddle » has lost: for the sound and the flying water, English reaches for « to splash ».
