Customer service and complaints

Case, escalation, goodwill — the language at the other end of the line.

O trabalho posterior à chamada is the wrap-up an adviser does once the caller has rung off, and the adjective in the middle is worth naming, because it is not a hard word in Portuguese at all. Posterior a is ordinary, neutral and office-plain: uma data posterior, a versão posterior, and the adverb posteriormente turns up in any letter without raising an eyebrow. English inherited the same Latin posterior, the comparative of posterus, coming after, but gave it two narrow homes and no everyday one. The first is technical — the posterior segment of the eye, a posterior probability — and the second is the polite noun for the part of a person that comes last, which is why « the work posterior to the call » reads as either a scientific paper or a joke, and never as a rota. What does the plain work in English is the bound prefix: « post-call », « post-match », « post-war » say exactly what posterior a says, and the flattest rendering of all is simply « after ». The Latin word is alive in both languages; only one of them still lets it stand on its own.
