Working from home

The words for a working day that happens between two rooms.

The third entry is o horário de sobreposição, the stretch of day when everybody is at a desk at once, and the English for it carries a picture the Portuguese does not. A sobreposição is made of sobre and pôr, over and put, and it says exactly that. « Overlap » has a garment inside it. « Lap » begins in Old English as læppa, the loose fold or flap hanging off a piece of clothing. From the fold comes the lap a seated person makes, because that is where the cloth gathers; from the fold comes the verb, to lay one edge partly over another, and from the verb comes « overlap ». « Lapel » is the small one, the flap turned back at the collar. Even the lap a runner completes is a circuit thought of as folding back on itself. One thing does not belong to the family: the « lap » a cat does at a saucer is Old English lapian, a separate word that only sounds alike. So the entry names hours that fold over one another, and o horário de sobreposição says it with no cloth in it at all.
