What holds these lists together

The words a society uses to talk about itself: in the news, in the debate on migration, in voluntary work, in the question of who can enter a building at all. You learn them less in private conversation than from what is broadcast and printed, where they come thick and fast. Many carry a political sense beside the literal one. O deputado is not a deputy but a member of parliament, and that parliament, a Assembleia da República, has a single chamber. A câmara on its own usually means not a chamber but the town council: a Câmara Municipal de Lisboa is Lisbon’s city hall.
