Camping and the motorhome

The twenty-second entry is a fogueira, and English has no single noun that will sit under it. Portuguese builds the word on o fogo and lets the setting say how big the fire is: A fogueira só é permitida no sítio de pedra on a campsite sign, a fogueira de São João on the night of the bonfires, fazer uma fogueira wherever wood is being burnt in the open. English divided that ground between two nouns and they are not interchangeable. « Campfire » is the small one that is cooked on and sat round, and it is the one this page needs. « Bonfire » is the large one — the heap of garden cuttings at the end of the autumn, the pile lit on the fifth of November — and it names an event rather than a source of warmth, so calling the fire on a pitch a bonfire overstates it and alarms the warden. A third form appears on the signs themselves, where English gives up the noun for the fire altogether and writes « no open fires ». That is the phrase a reader will actually meet, and it is what a site means when it allows a fogueira nowhere but the stone patch.
