O curso de português

Eight months of a language course, and the day it works for the first time.

A text about learning itself, and in passing it says what this whole site claims about European Portuguese: the hardest part is not the grammar but the listening. As pessoas comem as vogais — people swallow their vowels. It cannot be put more precisely.

O Miguel estuda português há oito meses. Vai a um curso três vezes por semana, à noite, depois do trabalho.

A aula começa às sete. São doze alunos e uma professora que fala devagar. No primeiro mês o Miguel percebia pouco; agora percebe quase tudo.

O mais difícil não é a gramática, é ouvir. Na rua as pessoas comem as vogais e ele perde metade das palavras. A professora diz que isso é normal e que passa com o tempo.

Em casa o Miguel lê um texto curto todas as noites e escreve as palavras novas num caderno. Ao domingo repete tudo outra vez.

Na semana passada comprou o pão sem pensar na frase antes. A empregada respondeu, ele percebeu, e ninguém falou inglês. Foi o melhor dia do curso.
