A avaria na estrada
A breakdown after the toll booth, and what it costs in the end.
The first text in this series in which something goes wrong and someone has to make a phone call. Watch the words you only need on that day and then every time again: o reboque, o orçamento, a garantia. And durante — the preposition that carries a duration, where English says “during” or “for”.
O carro fica na estrada poucos quilómetros depois da portagem. O motor aquece demasiado depressa. O Miguel desliga tudo e sai. A estrada está calma e ninguém passa durante muito tempo.
Telefona para o seguro. A senhora pergunta a matrícula e o sítio. Diz que o reboque chega dentro de uma hora. O Miguel fica sentado à espera com o telemóvel na mão.
Rebocam o carro para uma oficina pequena numa aldeia. O mecânico abre e olha durante muito tempo. Depois diz que é a bateria e que a peça só chega na segunda-feira. Pede um orçamento e o mecânico escreve os números num papel.
O trabalho do mecânico custa mais do que a peça. O Miguel pergunta se há desconto e o mecânico ri. Há sempre desconto para quem espera, diz ele. A reparação tem dois anos de garantia.
Na segunda-feira o carro está pronto. A revisão foi feita ao mesmo tempo e o óleo é novo. O Miguel paga com o cartão e guarda o recibo. O motor já não faz barulho nenhum.
