A job interview, and the question everybody dreads.
The text in which the words of the payslip appear in a sentence for the first time: o subsídio de alimentação, o período experimental, a termo certo. Notice how little of it can be translated — these are not words but institutions of a country.
A entrevista é às dez. A Rita chega vinte minutos antes e espera na receção. Leva o currículo numa pasta, mas ninguém pede nada. Uma senhora traz água e diz que vai demorar um bocadinho.
Entram dois. Um faz as perguntas, o outro escreve. Perguntam pela experiência profissional e pela formação. A Rita fala do estágio e do trabalho anterior. Diz que gosta de trabalhar com pessoas e que aprende depressa.
Depois vem a parte difícil. Perguntam quanto quer ganhar. A Rita diz um número e fica calada. O homem escreve e não diz nada durante uns segundos. Depois explica o horário, as horas extraordinárias e o período experimental.
O contrato é a termo certo, seis meses. Se correr bem, passa a sem termo. A Rita pergunta pelo subsídio de alimentação e pelas férias. Ele responde a tudo e parece contente com a pergunta.
Telefonam na sexta-feira. A vaga é dela. Começa no dia um do mês seguinte, com um horário das nove às seis. A Rita desliga o telemóvel e fica sentada à mesa da cozinha durante muito tempo.
