Aspect pairs: the perfective partners in Polish

The perfective partners of the first verbs: do, write, buy, take, say, ring, help, find and more.

Practise this list

From these 40 words, as many per round as you like — up to all of them: first what is due today, then new ones. First you choose, then you fill the gap, then you write it yourself. Mistakes come back again shortly.

More about this list

You already know the imperfective verbs from the first lists. Here are their perfective partners, which say that something gets done or happens once. English marks this with tense and little words — “I’ve read it”, “I’ll do it”, “read it through” — Polish with a different verb. A perfective has no present: forms that look like a present are future — zrobię means “I’ll do it”, never “I’m doing it”. In the past the partner shows the result: czytałam książkę “I was reading a book (for a while)”, but przeczytałam książkę “I read the book (to the end)”. Learn the pairs together; which prefix it is cannot be guessed.
