Geography

Regions, coasts, rivers and mountain ranges: the words for describing where a place is and what it is like.

Geography in Korean is almost entirely Sino-Korean, and the words are built like compounds in English science: 산맥 is “mountain” and “vein”, 반도 “half” and “island”, 상류 and 하류 “upper flow” and “lower flow”. Once you know 해 “sea”, 지 “land” and 대 “zone”, many words explain themselves. To say where something lies, use 위치하다 or the more everyday 있다.
