Tournaments, medals, records and results: the words of the sports pages.
These are the words of reporting rather than playing: how far a team got, how a match ended, what an athlete won. Many are Sino-Korean, and the syllables repeat: 승 “victory” in 우승, 승리, 무승부 and 승부차기; 선 “selection” in 예선 and 본선. Notice the verb that goes with a medal or a record: you 따다 (“pick”) a medal and 세우다 (“set up”) a record.
