What holds these lists together
Korea has four sharp seasons and talks about them constantly. Summer brings 장마, the monsoon rains of early summer, and the weather words are adjectives that conjugate, several of them irregular: 덥다, hot, becomes 더워요, and 춥다, cold, 추워요. Pleasantly cool and unpleasantly chilly are two words, 시원하다 and 쌀쌀하다, and 시원하다, to an English speaker’s surprise, also praises a steaming soup that feels good going down. One spelling, two words: 눈 is snow and an eye. The later lists add the landscape of a peninsula of mountains and coasts, the environment as it appears in the news, and the vocabulary of storms, floods and earthquakes.
