The body and health
From where it hurts to what the doctor writes down.
What holds these lists together
Saying where it hurts in Korean uses a pattern English does not have: two subjects in one sentence. 저는 머리가 아파요 is “as for me, the head hurts” — the person is the topic and the body part the subject, and 아프다 covers both pain and being ill. You catch a cold rather than getting one, 감기에 걸리다, literally “to be hooked on a cold”. For a small complaint people go to the pharmacy first, 약국; for anything more, to a clinic, 병원, a word that covers both a local doctor and a hospital. Many words in the later lists are Sino-Korean, and the same syllables recur: 입원 is going into hospital and 퇴원 leaving it. The lists run from the parts of the body to symptoms, treatment and a healthy life.
