Nature and animals

Mountains, rivers, fields, and the animals of the farm, the house and the zoo.

Most of these words are native Korean and short: 산, 강, 꽃, 새. Korean draws a line that English does not: a live fish is 물고기, “water meat”, while fish on a plate is 생선; a live chicken is 닭, its meat 닭고기. Young animals often have a word of their own — 강아지, 병아리, 송아지 — and every animal is counted with 마리: 고양이 두 마리.
