Work and careers
The job, the office, the colleagues and the meeting.
What holds these lists together
A Korean office runs on titles. Colleagues are addressed by their position with the respectful 님 — 부장님, 과장님, 팀장님 — and rarely by name alone, which is why the job titles are among the first words to learn at work. Going to work and leaving it are two everyday verbs, 출근하다 and 퇴근하다, and staying late has a word of its own, 야근. The language of the office is more formal than the language of the street: meetings and reports use the formal endings and many Sino-Korean words, 보고서, 회의, 결재. The lists go from the job title and the first day to interviews, contracts and the e-mail to a client.
