Working life

Finding a job, changing it, leaving it, and the kinds of work in between.

Working life in Japan has words for its own institutions: the informal job offer students receive months before they graduate (内定(ないてい)), a fixed retirement age (定年(ていねん)), and a sharp line between permanent staff and agency or part-time workers. Most of these nouns become verbs with する — 就職(しゅうしょく)する, 転職(てんしょく)する — and note that you 勤(つと)める at a company with に but 働(はたら)く there with で.
