N2  ·  40 words

Compound verbs

Two verbs joined into one, with a meaning of their own.

A compound verb joins two verbs: the first in the stem it has before ます, the second carrying the ending — 取(と)る and 消(け)す give 取(と)り消(け)す, to cancel. Only the second part conjugates, so the past is 取(と)り消(け)した. The meaning is often more than the sum of the parts: 見直(みなお)す is to look at something again, but also to think better of a person. Learn each one as a word of its own, not as two words you already know.
