How a system of rules turns into an experience.

The fifth entry is il budget per fotogramma, and the noun inside it is the one word on this list that an English reader can recognise and still get wrong. Il fotogramma is one single image on a strip of film, and by extension one of the pictures a game draws in a second: trenta fotogrammi al secondo, il fotogramma successivo, saltare un fotogramma. English owns the same two Greek pieces — phôs, light, and gramma, something drawn — but it put them together for a different object. A « photogram » is a picture made without a camera at all, by laying objects straight onto sensitised paper and turning on a lamp; it belongs to the history of art and not to a projector. The word English uses for the thing il fotogramma names is « frame », taken from carpentry, from the wooden surround that holds a picture rather than from the picture itself. So the two languages named one object from opposite sides: one from the light written on it, the other from the border around it. And il fermo immagine is the freeze frame.
