What holds these lists together

The words a society uses to talk about itself: in the news, in the debate on migration, in the local club, in the question of who can get into a building at all. You do not learn them in conversation but from what is broadcast and printed, where they come thick and fast. Almost every one has a political meaning beside its literal one. La Camera is the Chamber of Deputies, though la camera at home is a bedroom; and la manovra, literally a manoeuvre, is the government’s annual package of budget measures.
