La leggibilità is glossed here as readability, and that gloss is right about half the time. English keeps two words for two different questions. « Legibility » asks whether the eye can tell one letter from the next, and it is settled by the size of the type, the weight of the stroke, the space between the lines and the thing this list calls il contrasto. « Readability » asks whether the mind can follow the sentence once the eye has done its work, and it is settled by the length of the words and the shape of the syntax — which is what il linguaggio semplice and la lettura facilitata exist to repair. Italian sends both through la leggibilità and leaves the reader to work out which one is meant. In practice the noun that follows decides it: la leggibilità del carattere is the first kind, la leggibilità del testo the second. So when the difference matters, name what is being read rather than the quality. The sentence on this page, la leggibilità migliora con righe più corte, changes the setting and not a single word, which files it firmly under « legibility ».
