Greetings, conversation and ideas
Greetings and polite words, talking and explaining, giving an opinion, and the words for ideas.
What holds these lists together
A greeting in Hindi is a choice before it is a phrase: नमस्ते with the palms together suits anybody, आदाब and सत श्री अकाल belong to particular communities, and between friends हाय is as common as it is in English. Politeness lives less in a word for please than in the verb — बैठिए, do sit down — and in the choice of आप. From there the lists climb from the first hello to explaining, agreeing and disagreeing, giving reasons with क्योंकि and conclusions with इसलिए, and the abstract nouns a conversation about anything serious needs: विचार, अनुभव, ज़िम्मेदारी.
