Reading a German contract and understanding a letter from a solicitor.

This page explains vocabulary and is not legal advice; anything that matters belongs with a lawyer. Two features of German legal language make it easier than it looks once they are recognised. It is written almost entirely in the passive and in long noun phrases, so the verbs carry little and the nouns carry everything. And it repeats a small stock of terms — wirksam, Frist, Anspruch, Verstoß — which means a few dozen words unlock a great deal of text.
