Beekeeping

Beekeeping is a large amateur pursuit in the German-speaking countries and has kept a vocabulary of its own, much of it older than the standard language and none of it guessable. Die Beute is the hive, and it is a homonym of the word for prey — the beekeeper is the only person for whom it means a box. A colony is das Volk, the same word as a people. And the queen is usually not die Königin at all among beekeepers but die Weisel, which is why a queen cell is die Weiselzelle.
