The last entry is le revêtement coupe-feu, and its noun is one that English borrowed long ago and then shrank. « Revetment » came over from French as a word of fortification and has stayed with the engineers ever since: it is the facing of stone, concrete or rock armour laid against an embankment, a sea wall or the slope of a rampart so that water and weather cannot eat into it. A reader who knows it from a coastal scheme pictures something heavy and permanent. Le revêtement is nothing of the kind. It comes from revêtir, to clothe, and it names whatever is laid over a surface, however thin: le revêtement de sol is the floor covering, le revêtement de la chaussée the road surfacing, un revêtement antiadhésif the non-stick lining of a pan. Here it is a coat of intumescent paint a few millimetres deep, which swells in a fire and keeps the steel below its critical temperature for a stated time. So the English for this entry is « fire-protective coating », and « revetment » belongs on a different drawing altogether, the one with the tide on it.
