Working hours and pay

The last stretch of this list is copyright vocabulary, and l’usage loyal is the entry where the obvious reading is the wrong one. An English reader sees loyal, recognises it, and gets a phrase about devotion. French keeps a second sense in the same word, and in legal and commercial writing it is the leading one: loyal means honest, straight, played by the rules. So l’usage loyal is fair use, the short quotation the law allows without a licence; la concurrence loyale is fair competition, and la concurrence déloyale is the offence of unfair competition; un procédé loyal is an above-board method, and jouer loyalement is to play fair. The allegiance sense is there as well — rester loyal envers son employeur — so the word holds both jobs and the sentence decides which. The test is what the adjective is attached to: a person, and it is probably faithfulness; a use, a practice, a method or a market, and it is fairness. English has to change words at that point, and French does not.
