Être malade

Four days with a cold, from the chemist’s back to work.

The text whose words you hope never to need and always need first. Two things here are said differently in English: elle a mal à la tête — she has pain at the head —, and il vaut mieux for “it is better”, literally “it is worth more”.

Sophie est malade depuis vendredi. Elle a de la fièvre, elle tousse et elle a mal à la tête. Elle ne mange rien et elle boit seulement de l’eau.

Samedi matin elle va à la pharmacie du coin. La vendeuse demande ce qu’elle sent. Sophie répond qu’elle a trente-huit de fièvre.

La vendeuse dit qu’il vaut mieux aller chez le médecin. Le cabinet est derrière l’église et il ouvre à neuf heures. Sophie dit merci et elle sort.

Dans la salle d’attente il y a beaucoup de monde. Sophie attend une heure. Puis le médecin regarde sa gorge et dit que c’est un rhume. Il écrit une ordonnance et dit : reposez-vous trois jours.

Lundi Sophie va déjà mieux. Elle tousse encore un peu, mais la fièvre est partie. L’après-midi elle retourne au travail.
