Shopping and money
From the size to the receipt.
The second list you need on the ground, and the one with the most fixed phrases in it. One word here looks entirely familiar and shares not a single sense with its English twin. Le rayon is the aisle you walk down, the department of a shop and the shelf itself — c’est au rayon fromages points you to a part of the supermarket, not to a shelving unit. The same word is the ray of the sun, the spoke of a bicycle wheel and the radius of a circle, because all four are a line running out from a centre: the shelves radiate from the aisle. English borrowed the spelling for one thing only, the viscose textile, which has no connection to any of this and was coined as a trade name. So the word a shopper needs most often in this list is the one that will look most like an old friend and turn out to be a stranger.
