Conjunctions and linking words

The words that join clauses: even if, no matter, since, otherwise, unless, so as not to.

Chinese conjunctions often come in pairs, one in each half of the sentence, where English uses a single word: 即使(jíshǐ) wants 也(yě) later on, 无论(wúlùn) and 不管(bùguǎn) want 都(dōu), 既然(jìrán) wants 就(jiù). The second word is an adverb and stands after the subject of its clause, not at the front. Several words here also come in a spoken and a written form — 不然(bùrán) and 否则(fǒuzé), 哪怕(nǎpà) and 即便(jíbiàn) — and the list says which is which.
