What holds these lists together

English "play" splits into several Chinese verbs, and the choice follows the body. A ball struck with the hand or a racket takes 打(dǎ) — 打(dǎ)篮球(lánqiú), 打(dǎ)网球(wǎngqiú) — while football is kicked, 踢(tī)足球(zúqiú). An instrument played with the fingers takes 弹(tán), one played with a bow 拉(lā), to pull: 弹(tán)钢琴(gāngqín), 拉(lā)小提琴(xiǎotíqín). 玩儿(wánr) covers a child playing and an adult having a good time, and also a visit for pleasure: 去(qù)北京(Běijīng)玩儿(wánr) is a trip, not a game. Results are 赢(yíng) and 输(shū), win and lose, and a score is read with the word for comparing: 三(sān)比(bǐ)二(èr), three to two. The lists run from hobbies and days off to tournaments, records and the people who watch them.
