The arts and literature

Writers, painters, exhibitions, the stage and the page.

Many words for people in the arts end in 家(jiā), which marks someone who has made a field their own: 作家(zuòjiā), 画家(huàjiā), 书法家(shūfǎjiā). The theatre comes in kinds English does not separate: 话剧(huàjù) is a play with spoken dialogue, 京剧(jīngjù) Beijing opera, sung and stylised, and 相声(xiàngsheng) a comic dialogue that English can only call “crosstalk”.
