History and memory in Spanish

Talking about the past without judging it.

La historia is history and it is also a story, and Spanish does not separate the two: la historia de España and te cuento una historia use the same word, and so does eso es otra historia. English splits them and puts a value on the split, since calling an account « a story » hints that it may not be true — that is the whole force of « that is just a story ». The Spanish noun carries no such suspicion. Where the difference has to be marked, other words do it: un cuento is a made-up tale, un relato a narrative, and el historial is a record, of illnesses or of jobs held.
