Holding a text together

Cabe is the third person of caber, to fit, and used with no subject at all it opens half the sentences in a Spanish report. Cabe añadir que… is « it is worth adding that »; cabe destacar is « it should be noted »; cabe preguntarse is « one may ask »; no cabe duda is « there is no doubt ». In legal writing cabe recurso means an appeal lies — the same construction again, with the one English verb that behaves like it. Behind all of them is a space with room left in it: what cabe is whatever will still fit. English changes verb every time, and none of its choices carries the room.
