At the doctor and at the chemist in Spanish

Saying what hurts — and understanding what to do.

In English the person is the subject of the pain: I have a headache, my eye is stinging. Spanish turns that round — the part hurts, and the person is only the one it happens to: me duele la cabeza, me escuece el ojo, le salió un sarpullido. Two things follow. The verb agrees with the body part rather than with you, so two ears give me duelen los oídos. And there is no « my »: me has already said whose eye it is, which is why me duele mi cabeza is the sentence a beginner writes and it names the head twice.
