El mercado del sábado

Shopping, sums and a conversation about tomatoes.

A text about numbers and quantities. As you read you will notice that a de always stands between the quantity and the thing — un kilo de tomates — and that mucho is not followed by one but agrees instead.

El sábado por la mañana hay mercado en la plaza. Muchas personas compran fruta y verdura. Hay tomates, naranjas, patatas y cebollas.

Ana llega temprano porque después hay poca cosa. Lleva una bolsa grande y una lista corta. Quiere tomates, pan y queso.

El hombre de los tomates es mayor y habla mucho. Le pregunta a Ana si quiere un kilo o dos. Ana dice que uno es bastante para dos personas.

Los tomates cuestan tres euros el kilo. Ana paga con cinco y recibe dos euros. Después compra queso en otro puesto.

A las once la plaza está llena. Ana bebe un café con su hermana y las dos vuelven a casa a pie. La bolsa pesa mucho.
